Curriculum
Vera Chaves Barcellos was born in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, in 1938. In the 1960’s, she dedicated herself to engraving after taking two years of the art course at the then Instituto de Belas Artes de Porto Alegre, as well as to studies in England, Holland and France. In the beginning of the 1970’s the artist began to use photography in her work. In 1975, she further developed her knowledge in photography and graphical techniques, with a scholarship of the British Council, at the Croydon College, in London. In 1976, Vera Chaves Barcellos was part of the Brazilian representation at the La Biennale di Venezia with the work Testarte. Since the 1970’s, the artist has been active in Porto Alegre’s art scene, being among the founders of Nervo Óptico (1976-1978), the Espaço N.O. (1979-1982) and also the Obra Aberta gallery(1999-2002). In 2005, Vera Chaves Barcellos presided a foundation dedicated to art, which carries her name.  The artist works in the city of Viamão, RS, Brazil and also in Barcelona, Spain, since the mid 1980’s.
