Richard John is a visual artist and professor. He holds a degree in Painting and Drawing, as well as a Master’s and a PhD in Visual Poetics from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Influenced by Marcel Duchamp, Conceptual Art, and iconographic research, his practice focuses on the interplay between image and word, explored through drawing, painting, and writing. He is particularly interested in language games and the potential discursive failures inherent in conventional forms of representation, which serve as a critical foundation for understanding art as an inherently self-referential and self-consuming activity. By revisiting primary references of codification, whether personal or collective, the artist seeks to free himself from what he calls “The Tyranny of Form,” in an affective affirmation in favor of utopia and individuation.
